Bed, Bar & Beyond

Bed, Bar & Beyond is an installation of projected images, transparent materials, light, and constructed display. The title suggests three spaces and three modes of being: bed as interiority, bar as performed identity, and beyond as interpretation. The bed is a place where memory, fantasy, and the private self are projected onto one another. The bar is where identity is projected outward into the social world. Between them lies the space of interpretation.

The installation is structured through a series of splits—bedroom and study, bed and bar, private and public. It juxtaposes my own bedroom with Freud's study, placing a personal space alongside one historically associated with its analysis. Printed on translucent material and activated by projected light, the images divide and layer the space, remaining visible through one another.

An illuminated bar anchors the installation, while a bed draped with men's neckties evokes intimacy, desire, identity, and the traces of masculinity. Nearby, a suspended lampshade containing books from the ArtCenter curriculum casts light through the texts that shaped my time there. Rather than resolving these relationships, the installation allows personal experience, borrowed histories, and cultural references to accumulate new meanings through their proximity to one another.
